What is TACA H20?

TEAM Talk About Curing Autism (TACA) Hood River 2 Ogden (H2O) is a group of individuals dedicated to raising awareness for autism and $25,000 for Talk About Curing Autism (TACA). Your proceeds will go directly to TACA and help enable them to move an education program to the state of Oregon. TACA provides information, support and resources to families affected by autism. To promote this effort, Team TACA H2O bicycled 850 miles from Hood River, Oregon to Ogden, Utah July 7 - July 14, 2010. Take a look at the photos and stories from this trip in our blog archive. Team member Scott Rowley will also be running in the Portland Marathon this year on 10-10-10 to benefit TACA. Stories will be posted in during the course of his training over the next month.

TACA H2O Day 1-4 Update

Day 1: Hood River, OR to Biggs Junction OR
July 7, 2010
Departure @ 6:00PM
Arrival @ 1030PM
Temp: 75-85 Degrees
Total Distance: 47 miles
Route Notes/Experience:
  • After a long morning and afternoon full of trips to WalMart, Safeway and Discovery Bikes Team H2O departed for there Journey to Ogden Utah
  • The first 20 miles were on Old Columbia River Hwy overlooking the Columbia Gorge
  • Traveled on 15 mile road for several miles and missed our turn onto Moody Rd
  • Moody Rd was gravel and Drew had to walk in his bare feet due to painful bike shoes
  • After a very long 47 miles 7 of which were on a gravel road we arrived @ camp around 1030PM
  • Camp Location was Deschutes River State Park @ Biggs Junction

Overall Day 1 was a great success! We bonded more as a team and had a positive evening walking into the sunset overlooking the Columbia George in Oregon.

Day 2: Biggs Junction, Oregon to Fossil Oregon
July 8, 2010
Departure @ 1030AM
Arrival @ 7PM
Temp: 105 Degrees
Total Mileage = 85 Miles
Route Notes/Experience:
  • Very Hot 110 degrees on the Black Top
  • Drank lots of water, roughly
  • Great camp site @ Shelton Wayside
  • Fun Hills to ride down after long pushes up hill
  • Top Speed = 45MPH on our bikes

  • Sammy and Scott made the 5000 ft climb up to camp for the night just as the sun started to go down. Another positive day!

Day 3 Shelton Wayside to John Day, Oregon
July 9, 2010
Departure @ 7:30AM
Arrival @ 2:45PM
Temp: 95 Degrees
Total Mileage = 104 Miles
Route Notes/Experience:
  • Once again very hot day! We could see heat waves miles down the road that we would soon encounter. Team H2O pushed through the heat to make it to Johnday Oregon in just over 7 hours.
  • Camped next to the John Day River
  • Experienced some rain, thunder and lightning

Day 4 John Day, Oregon to Vale, Oregon
July 10, 2010
Departure @ 7:30AM
Arrival @ 5:00PM
Temp: 95 Degrees
Total Mileage = 116 Miles
Route Notes/Experience:
  • We got an early start today! Up @ 530AM with SammyC stoked to get the ball rolling on another day and try to beat the heat.
  • Lots of climbing: 2 mountain passes through the Blue Mountains @ 5500 feet
  • Drew and Scott could not beat the heat and were off the bikes after mile 50
  • Sammy and Brian pushed on into the 95 degree plus temps, while Scott, Drew and Craig relaxed at a pond in the middle of No Man's Land
  • Sammy and Brian arrived in Vale Oregon @ 545Pm after a long 116 mile day of riding. Yeah bouys!
